Aeolian Inspiration – Outreach education workshop for Airbus and schools

Since setting tradesecrets up in 1996 we have worked for over 100 different clients in the Europe and the US. 80% of those clients has been corporate development and training. 10% has been entertainment and 10% education – We are currently engaged on our 13th piece of education work with our new client Airbus.

The challenge has been set, the bar has been raised and we are full steam ahead on the designing and implementation of a program which gives context to a beautiful new piece of sculpture and shares insight with connection to key stage learning for local schools. Elements such as wing design, areodynamics, fuel load, pressure fluctuations and engine mechanics are all in the mix and we have had to design an interactive training piece that has made this work accessible to young students at schools all over Bristol.

The work has been fascinating and we have spoken to many brilliant people in the process, engineers and artists alike and getting them to communicate with each other.

Luke Jerram was the sculptor who created the Aeolus – the sculpture that now sits at the entrance of the Airbus Filton site and is present as an investigation into acoustics and wind movement. We used this emblem at the heart of a workshop (with a little bit of added drama) designed to engage students in aspects or aerodynamics.

The program is designed to run at intermittent periods in the course of the year as part of Airbus’s brilliant outreach program to young students.

A short sharp session for the CIPD at The Barbican

We were asked to “present” what we do and how we do what we do at a recent event hosted by the CIPD. A room full of industry professionals scrutinising what we do at close quarters. Alot of our teaching and training is about coping with performance pressure and dealing with the concept of being observed by client or peer – so if we can’t walk our talk what are we doing trading, selling our teaching.

Mel and I ran three exercises that bought to light how “tough” and sometimes “rigid” corporate messages can be bought to life with fun and humour. There is always the fear and resistance to “getting involved” and playing. But true to form as in alot of our work the moment people realise they can gain insight through what they are “enabled” to observe in each other the pressure of speaking out and doing is removed.

I recently was link’d into a brilliant TED talk by Brian Goldman
many of you may well have seen it. he speaks out boldly and courageously against a practice that we all have a hunch may well be taking place. The detail is extraordinary – what drew me in was the moment he connects and understands the enablement that “change” can bring and by speaking out and identifying what words he needs to say and practice his considerable pressure is removed. May we all find the grace to spot those moments and have the same courage.

Cognolink Research Team Away Day Training Session

So after much thought and planning our away day team inspiration event on the 12th September went without hitch….well almost…getting 15 people down to Bournemouth proved tricker than we had thought. We started a little later in the day but managed to squeeze a fun fuelled packed day in with the Research Team. The pictures prove testament to this. We had planned a day that involved quite a lot of paint, a bit of chat, and some engaging exercises to help fuel the debate and engage the thinking matter on themes such as growth, change, commitments and the future. The team did really well and the art work speaks for itself

So it would seem the tweeting does not allow for much space to keep others updated as to what we are engaged in from month to month and after continual requests (and prompting from our fabulous website developers Dusted) we have decided to dedicate ourselves to keeping a blog live to keep all abreast of developments at tradesecrets.

As far as I understand it all it involves is a couple of hours a week or month depending on how busy we are. Happy to receive your feedback on how useful you find this and I aim for the updates to be shared amongst all of the players at tradesecrets from time to time.
